À propos de cette collection

Cape Breton Gaelic Folklore Collection / Cruinneachadh Beul-Aithris Gàidhlig Cheap Breatainn is a collection of interviews, stories, and songs collected from native gaelic speakers in Cape Breton from 1977 - 1982.

The Collection was developed by St. Francis Xavier University Celtic Studies Department under the leadership of Sr. Margaret MacDonell with recording done by John Shaw. Funding for development of the collection was through grants from the Muilticulturalism Directorate of the Government of Canada.

After the work of collecting in the field was completed in 1982 one set of the 300 reel to reel tapes was housed in the Department of Celtic Studies at Saint Francis Xavier University. It was soon realized that the difficulty in handling and using reel to reel tapes made it desirable to copy the tapes to a more user-friendly medium such as cassettes. This was done gradually over the late 1980s and early 1990s. Also in the early 1990s, work was begun to produce a database of the items in the collection. At the same time it was felt that the public should have some access to this valuable material. Therefore, with the aid of a grant from the Centre for Regional Studies at StFX two additional sets of cassettes were made. One set of the cassettes was placed in the Music Room of the Angus L. Macdonald Library on the StFX campus where it has been available to the public for listening since 1995. Additional work was also done on the database with a view to making it available on the Internet.

In 2000 it was decided to place a small sample of items from the Collection on the Internet. A grant from Industry Canada was obtained by the Media Forge on the StFX campus for young computer personnel to do the technical work of digitizing thirty items and developing a website. The Celtic Studies Department supplied the background information, an English summary and a lesson for each of the items. This sample project has been on the Internet since March 2001 as part of Canadas Digital Collections, Industry Canada at the website

The digitization of this Gaelic collection first began in January 2005 with a grant received by Professor Jamie MacDonald, StFX Celtic Studies Department, from the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

The completion of the digitation with addition images and documents was done as part of the Gael Stream / Sruth nan Gaidheal with the aid of a grant from Library Archives Canada.
